What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is an inflammatory condition affecting the gums and, in more advanced stages, the bone supporting the teeth. It begins with plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If plaque isn’t adequately removed, it turns into tartar, which is more challenging to clean and can cause inflammation of the gums, known as gingivitis. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that become infected.

Signs & Symptoms

The early stages of periodontal disease often present few or no symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Swollen, red, or tender gums
  • Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together

Periodontal Disease Diagnosis

Early diagnosis of periodontal disease is key to effective treatment. During your visit, we conduct a thorough examination of your gums, checking for signs of inflammation, measuring the depth of gum pockets, and taking x-rays to assess bone loss. This comprehensive evaluation helps us determine the extent of the disease and the best course of action.

Periodontal Disease Treatments

Our treatment for periodontal disease depends on the severity of the condition and may range from extensive cleaning regimens to surgical interventions.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that involves removing tartar and bacteria from below the gum line (scaling) and smoothing the tooth roots to help gums reattach (root planing). This non-surgical treatment can be very effective in halting the progression of periodontal disease.

Antibiotics

In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to help control bacterial infection. These can be in the form of mouth rinses or gels applied directly into the gum pockets.

Soft Tissue Grafting

If gum recession has occurred, soft tissue grafting may be recommended. This procedure involves taking tissue from another part of your mouth to cover exposed tooth roots, improving gum health and appearance.

Bone Grafting

For more advanced periodontal disease that has resulted in bone loss, bone grafting can help regenerate lost bone, providing better support for your teeth.

Periodontal Surgery

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to reduce gum pocket depth and restore damaged tissues. Our team is skilled in the latest surgical techniques, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.
